Nguyen Huu Nam (Richard Nguyen)
CEO Ho Chi Minh City Securities Corporation
Vietnam Economy

Nguyen Huu Nam, prior to the joining of HSC, was an Assistant Vice President and a POLCOM’s member of Citigroup Vietnam. He has been the Strategy & Planning Manager, Corporate and Regulatory Affairs Manager of BAT after working as the Director of Business Development, Getz Bros. & Co. Before this work, he was the Manager of Sumitomo Corporation. Mr. Richard received his MBA from the Open University of Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam before attending Southern California University in the United States, to get a PhD degree in Business Administration.

Mr. Nguyen believes that Vietnam’s economy is growing fast. He stated that Vietnam’s GDP growth rate is about 8% annually. However, there still a lot of things to do, especially in the finance sector. He also spoke about some challenges that Vietnam is facing. Two most important ones are diversifying citizens’ thinking and the rural-to-urban migration. In his opinion, integration makes more and more people move to the urban areas. It is a big problem for Vietnam because over 72% of the population is farmers.

Interviewing Mr. Nguyen was a very interesting experience for us because he stated some of Vietnam’s challenges that we didn’t consider as significant opportunities of improvement. We think he is a very wise person. His experience in businesses and his participation in worldwide events like APEC taught us that is very important to get involve and think not only for the benefit only our country but of all the other countries in the world, because globalization is not a rumor, it is happening and everyone is affected by it. We also believe that we must focus on education for the present and future generations because education is the key to success and development of any country. Finally we feel that Mr. Richard is an example to follow, and that we need more people like him, who think about the wellbeing of every single country that is part of this planet, so someday we will have the expected world where equality of opportunities are present. “Integration is like the water coming to the country."
