Vice-Admiral
Luis Giampietri Rojas
Vice President of Peru
About the Vice President
A disciplined life working as navy officer for more than 40 years, heading institutions
for the research of marine ecosystems and now sharing with President Alan Garcia
the responsibility of conducting Peru.
These credentials
depict the Vice President of Peru, Vice Admiral Luis Giampietri.
For Mr. Giampietri, it is fundamental to show the political leaders and investors
of the Pacific Rim that after years of terrorism, inflation and other nightmares
Peru has risen out of this and now stands as a peaceful and trustworthy place
to invest and develop ambitious projects.
Vice
President Giampietri
For the Vice Admiral of the Peruvian navy, one of the biggest tasks that the
government is dealing with is building infrastructure to broaden the capacity
of Peru, providing better services and exporting more important goods. It is
also important to maintain the quality and standards of ports and airports all
over the country, while also overseeing the construction of the Inter-oceanic
road that will connect the Amazonic states of Brazil with the southern regions
of Peru in order to connect these areas with the Asia-Pacific.
“Peru has woken up and now stands as a peaceful and trustworthy place to invest”.
Another matter that Vice President Giampietri considers of large importance is to maintain peace and cooperation with foreign economies to tackle the problem of drug production and smuggling. To fight these illegal trafficking acts, the Peruvian government has designed the program ‘Sierra Exportadora,” in which tributary incentives are given in the areas that are over 3000 meters over the sea level. This program establishes industries and generates competitive agricultural products such as artichokes and native potatoes. In that way the peasants of the highlands have alternative activities to carry out, which results in activities other than growing coca leaves.
A point that I consider remarkable of the conversation with Mr. Giampietri is that the Peruvian government recognizes the importance of consistency and perseverance in politics. According to Mr. Giampietri, we need to be able to continue with the policies that have proved effective and amend those that were not that effective. This, he feels, is the only way of keeping away from the ghosts of the past.
